Stewart Crocker
Stewart’s background in agriculture gave him first-hand experience of the adverse impact of agrichemicals on the natural environment and underpinned his conversion in the 1980s to organic farming.
This led him to work for a range of environmental and international development organisations, including as a director of the Soil Association and of Waste Watch, also as a trustee of FarmAfrica and of Friends of the Earth, where he was appointed Vice Chair for eight years until 2016.
Stewart’s enthusiasm for empowering community action prompted him and others to create of Somerset Climate Action Network https://somersetcan.org.uk/. Prompted by the opportunity to contribute to driving down carbon emissions, Stewart also joined the Board of Avalon Community Energy, of which he was Chair until 2022.
His passion for promoting sustainable food systems led Stewart to become a founder trustee of Feedback Global. Subsequently he joined with others in 2016 to create a locally based member of the national network of Sustainable Food Places. In 2024 the organisation merged with Somerset Community Food https://www.somersetcommunityfood.org.uk/ to become Sustainable Food Somerset https://www.sustainablefoodsomerset.org/ of which Stewart Chaired the Board until Spring 2025, when he handed the reigns over to his successor, Kate Hughes.
The organisation aims to support community activism through a wide range of food projects and to stimulate public engagement through its Food Trail Festivals https://www.somersetfoodtrail.org/. In November 2024 it ran a conference and exhibition called LandAlive https://www.landalive.co.uk/ to provide a forum for practitioners, policy makers and influencers involved in promoting regenerative agriculture across the Southwest food and farming sector.
