Wells Little Theatre

Wells Little Theatre, home to the Wells Operatic Society Ltd, has been at the heart of amateur theatre in Wells, Somerset, for more than a century. Founded in 1901 as the Wells Operatic Society, it staged its first production the following year. Early performances—mainly operas—were held in the Town Hall until both World Wars interrupted activities.

Today, the theatre is a registered charity and relies entirely on the commitment of volunteers, who manage everything from acting and directing to set design, lighting, and front-of-house duties. Running costs—about £300 a week—are met through membership, ticket sales, and donations, making community support vital to its survival.

Beyond entertainment, Wells Little Theatre serves as a cultural hub where people of all ages can engage in creative expression, learn new skills, and foster community spirit. Its long history, dedicated membership, and continued growth make it a cornerstone of Wells’ cultural life—small in size but rich in heritage and ambition.
